In yesterday’s tip, we shared some tips from Bark Busters on avoiding substances toxic to your dog, a subject especially timely since this is National Animal Poison Prevention Week.

Today we look at Bark Buster’s tips on recognizing signs of toxicity or poisoning in your dog. While you might know the substances to avoid, what if you’ve had your dog out on a walk, saw him drink from a puddle or snatch a quick bite, and now he’s acting sick? Could it be poisoning? Look for these signs:

  • Vomiting/upset stomach
  • Labored OR shallow breathing
  • Drooling
  • Increased OR decreased heart rate
  • Fever
  • Hyperactivity OR sluggishness/lethargy
  • Increased thirst OR lack of thirst or hunger
  • Dilated pupils
  • Stumbling or staggering
  • Seizures or tremors
  • Loss of consciousness

If you think there’s a chance your dog may have ingested a toxic substance, get to your vet or emergency vet immediately. If you saw what your dog ate, bring in the packaging of the item or a sample of the plant you think your dog may have eaten; this can be very helpful to your veterinarian in knowning how best to treat your dog.
