Understanding Your Dog’s Vision

Does your dog see as well as he should? And just how good should that be? Knowing if your dog is having problems with his vision first means knowing just what standard dog vision means.

In general, dogs have very good vision–except when it comes to objects up close. Have you ever watched your dog look for a dropped treat? When the treat is closer than a foot or two, his nose takes over the task because dog vision becomes very fuzzy at that distance.

And what about color? Dogs can distinguish colors but not every color. As humans, we see many shades of these colors: Violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red.

Dogs see colors much like a person with red-green colorblindness. They see the world in terms of blues (and grays) and yellows. Orange, yellow, red, and green look the same to a dog–like yellow! And blue-greens? They look white to your dog.

Understanding your dog’s vision is important not only for determining if he’s seeing OK but in relating to him in daily life. If you’re selecting a toy for him, be sure to make it a color combination he can see well and appreciate!
