Honoring Mom and Helping Dogs

Are you thinking about a gift for your mother for Mother’s Day? (It’s right around the corner!) If your mom is an animal lover, it’s a great time to consider a gift in her honor with one of the many animal groups. Many have special programs that permit you to donate in honor of a loved one, to sponsor an animal, or to make purchases that benefit animals.

Here’s a sampling of some organizations doing great work for animals that need your help:

AdoptAPet.com You can make a one-time or recurring donation at this adoption site, all in the name of your mom.

ASPCA A special page for Mother’s Day makes it easy to donate to the ASPCA and send your mom an e-card at the same time!

Best Friends Animal Society Is your mom a fan of National Geographic Channel’s DogTown? You can sponsor a dog at the shelter featured on the show (or a cat, bunny, barnyard animal, bird or more) for as little as $25.

The Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation Is your mom a Dog Whisperer fan? Cesar Millan’s foundation is a non-profit group dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and placing abused and abandoned dogs. You’ll find lots of options here from financial pledges to purchasing autographed copies of Millan’s A Member of the Family book to buying a poster for as little as $9.95 to help support dogs.

The Humane Society of the United States
You’ll find a special page dedicated to Mother’s Day gift giving on this site; for as little as $25, you’ll also receive a free one-year subscription to the organization’s All Animals magazine. You can also donate by calling 1-866-MY-FRIEND (1-866-693-7436).

Petfinder.com Foundation Over 1100 shelters participate in the Sponsor-a-Pet program through Petfinder.com Foundation or you can opt to make a direct donation in honor of a special person.

SPCA International The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has several great donation programs including No Buddy Gets Left Behind, a program to help US soldiers bring home their four-legged friends from the war zones.

Your Local Shelters and Rescue Groups Don’t forget your local shelters and rescue groups! The economy has meant tough times for these groups as more and more animals are being surrendered to shelters. Call your local shelter and ask about making a donation in honor of your mom!

Dogs can act unpredictably. I was transporting a 6 month old lab- border collie mix and the dog got off of it's leash in the back seat-Got into the passenger side and then attacked me 17 times while I was driving. What a mess. I was able to control the car. The bites were on the arms-luckily not on my face. This was a nice dog that had been living with children. Apparently when we passed by some cows it got scared aggressive and then attacked me. Lesson- Dogs can act in an unpredicatble manner and when transporting a dog -even if you know the animal, keep it in a crate.
