Participating in a Dog Parade

Spring brings a passel of pooch parades, fun ways to enjoy some good weather with your dog and participate in a community event (often a canine fundraiser). But how can you make sure the event will be safe, fun and hassle free for you and your four-legged friend?

Preregister. If possible, preregister for your dog parade. This will save you the added task of registering (and possibly standing in line) with your leash in hand the day of the event.

Parking. Events that bring in thousands of participants also bring in thousands of cars. Minimize event stress by making parking plans early.

Practice. If your dog is not accustomed to the parade route, consider walking nearby if possible, to acquaint both of you with the route and any special considerations.

Prepare. Does your dog need any immunizations before the event? Is he microchipped? Do you need to print out a photo to take with you just in case he gets away? Do you need to copy any ownership documents/vet records to prove ownership in case he gets away and is picked up?

Pack with the Parade in Mind. Along with your usual dog walking goodies (bags, wipes, an extra leash), consider a few extras. Water stations are usually found along the way but do you want to carry a collapsible bowl for your dog? Will your dog be able to walk the entire parade route or will you need to consider carrying him or pushing him in a pet stroller?

Photos. Don’t forget your camera!
