Planning an Easter Egg Hunt for Your Dog

Easter egg hunts for dogs are popping up everywhere these days but you can also plan a fun and easy Easter egg hunt at home. Using food and treats you already have on hand, you can make the holiday a memorable one for you and a fun “hunt” for food for your dog.

To plan our Easter egg hunt, we used hard-boiled eggs, cooked the night before and refrigerated. We used three peeled eggs for each dog but base this on your dog’s weight and typical diet. Our hunt served as our dogs’ breakfast so we substituted a comparable amount of food they always receive.

We also gave each dog one Pegetables, dog treats made with vegetables in fun shapes that were perfect for Easter!

Other ideas for your Easter basket can be small squares of cheese, dog biscuits, cubes of cooked chicken, pieces of warmed hot dog, you name it. The most important factor is to select food your dog loves and tolerates in amounts he normally eats.

Our Easter egg hunt took place in our yard; if you’ve got a similar option, it’s perfect for an off-leash hunt. If you don’t have a yard, your local park can work for a leashed egg hunt (just be sure to make a sweep of the area first to make sure there are no non-edibles like chicken bones, discarded candy, etc.)

If you use hard-boiled eggs, be sure you know the number of eggs you hide. Whether in your yard or at the park, you’ll want to make sure every egg has been eaten or discarded; eating leftover eggs found days later will make a dog ill.

Have your camera ready; the hunt won’t take too long! When it’s all over, you’ll have fun memories of a spring day and your dog will have had the chance to bring out his inner wolf with a little hunt for a delicious meal!
