Preparing a Pet Evacuation Kit

On June 1, the Atlantic Hurricane season begins. Are you ready? Even though you may not live on the coast, hurricanes can impact many inland areas and mean evacuation orders for you and your dog. (And, think about it: you could always need to evacuate for other reasons ranging from fires to chemical spills in your region.)

It pays to be prepared! Part of that preparation is making preparations for your pets. PurinaCare Pet Health Insurance has just come out with a really helpful list you can use to prepare a Pet Evacuation Kit:

-- All pets should wear an identification tag and collar
-- At least one week's supply of food in water-tight container
-- At least one week's supply of water
-- Leash and harness for dogs and cats
-- Appropriate size pet carrier for dogs and cats
-- Make sure vaccinations are up to date
-- Copies of updated vaccination certificates (required by shelters)
-- Pet medications (including heartworm / flea prevention)
-- Litter box, litter for cats
-- Updated photos of your pet in case they get lost
-- Your pet's favorite toy to help calm nerves

We'd also suggest using online resources for storing some of this information. Do you have a gMail, Yahoo or Hotmail or other web-based email account? You can upload photos of your dogs and other pets, scan your vaccination records and email those to yourself, and email your dog's microchip information, too. With webmail, you'll have access even if you have to relocate.
