Locating Pet Food Banks

In these tough economic times, the unconditional love of a dog is more important than ever. As unemployment numbers rise, however, more pet families are having a difficult time not only putting food on their own table but in the dog’s bowl as well.
A growing number of pet food banks or pet food pantries offer assistance and want to help. “Families in our community who fall on hard times should not be concerned that they need to give up a beloved pet because they cannot afford food. The pantry keeps families together and numbers down at the local shelters. We feel this is a win-win for everyone,” says Prince William SPCA President Melissa Korzuch. Prince William SPCA in Manassas, Virginia recently opened a pet food pantry, the first in the region.
If you need assistance, even for a short time, check with local organizations in your area. Below you’ll find web sites that list pet food pantries (and some that include veterinary assistance, too). Don’t see one in your area? Check with your local pet service providers–veterinary clinics, local shelters and rescue organizations–for their recommendations.
Also, check with traditional food pantries and assistance organizations in your area to see if they know of pet food pantries in your area. There’s no central clearinghouse or list of pet food pantries so there might be one in your region that’s not on these lists.
Don’t need the services of a pet food pantry right now? They need you! There are many ways you can help. The Prince William SPCA recommends donating unopened wet or dry pet food as well as gift cards from stores where pet food is sold. Call your local pet food pantry for more ideas on how you can pitch in during these tough times to ensure that pet families remain together!
