Summer is the perfect time for a long walk through the woods with your dog–and the perfect time for running into trouble.

Whether it’s slithering or stinging, trouble comes in many forms. Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI) has just released its list of the top 10 wild animals–not other dogs or cats–that caused dog owners to file an insurance claim on their dog in 2008.

During the year they saw a variety of wild animal attacks, everything from black bears and mountain lions to sea urchins and jellyfish. These 10 animals and insects took the top places in the list of those most responsible for pet injury claims in 2008:

1. Snake
2. Coyote
3. Raccoon
4. Squirrel
5. Scorpion
6. Javelina
7. Porcupine
8. Ground Hog
9. Skunk
10. Rat
