Removing Mushrooms From Your Dog’s Reach

Recently we’ve had some much needed rain here and with that rain has come the sudden appearance of mushrooms. These fungi pop up practically overnight, dotting the lawn…a lawn shared by the dogs.

Did you know that mushrooms present a real safety hazard to your dog? According to the ASPCA:

ALWAYS assume that any ingested mushroom is highly toxic until a mycologist positively identifies it. Toxic and non-toxic mushrooms can grow in the same area.

ASPCA goes on to say if you see your dog eat a mushroom, any kind of mushroom, get in touch with your vet right away.

Here’s an excellent article on Petfinder.com from the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center with more information including symptoms of mushroom poisoning in dogs. For more on the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center, call (888) 426-4435 or visit www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/.

We’re off to dig up those mushrooms in the yard!
