Agreeing on a Shelter Adoption
In DogTipper's interview last week with Cesar Millan, we talked with the "Dog Whisperer" about adopting shelter dogs. In his new book, How to Raise the Perfect Dog, and the companion season opener for Dog Whisperer, Millan discusses the important points not only in raising a puppy but in selection of the new dog.
When it comes to selecting a shelter dog, one point Millan feels strongly about is agreement by the family about the choice of dog. In our interview, he noted:
Make sure your family comes... if it's a family related situation. The decision has to be made by the pack, not by one person, because a lot of times the dog will gravitate to that family member and it will exclude the other family members.Photo courtesy National Geographic Channel
I work in cases like that often, where the dog gravitates to the wife and when the husband wants to come to the bedroom, the dog doesn't let him, because he knows that he doesn't like the dog, and ...when they went and adopted the dog, he didn't want it. She wanted it, so there was no agreement. It's very important that we have an agreement as a family.
