Choosing a Mixed Breed Dog: Advice from Cesar Millan

As we continue our week of tips from Cesar Millan from last week's interview regarding his new book, How to Raise the Perfect Dog, and the sixth season of "Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan," today's tip covers adopting mixed breed dogs. The Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation works to benefit shelters and rescue organizations; in the interview, Millan noted, "my pack is from a rescue organization."
Millan explained that, not only are dog lovers saving a life in selecting a mixed breed dog from a shelter, but they're also adopting a dog that may make life easier on themselves as well:
Please, make sure you go to a shelter, and if you think that a purebred dog is better than a mutt, then think twice. You know what I mean? Because the intensity of a purebred dog, if you are not ready, it intensifies your life. If you're not challenging properly, a German shepherd well-bred, then guess what? It's like an extra boost to what already exists....
So, one thing that people can understand from adopting a mutt, or adopting a rescued dog, is ... the intensity level is … down. It's not so intense, so for a first-timer, it’s like the perfect dog to begin with. And at the same time, you get to help a life, you get to save a life.
Right now I think we are in a world where we have to give somebody a chance, so we can trigger a ripple effect, and what a better thing to begin with than our dogs.
