Making Your Dog’s Info Easy to Find

Whether you travel or not, it’s important to have your dog’s information easily accessible by family or friends who might have to come to your home to take care of your dog. (Not to be a worrier, but emergencies happen every day. You might not plan to be out of your home a day or two, but what if you get in an accident and wind up in the hospital for a few days?) It only takes a few minutes to get your dog’s information together in one central, easy-to-locate place such as the inside of a pantry door. (Make it the pantry where you store your dog’s food and you’ll make it even easier on everyone.) Here are some suggestions for information to include:

  • the names and descriptions of all your pets.
  • the name and phone number of your vet.
  • microchip numbers and the phone number and/or website of subscription services where this number is registered.
  • the names of all medications your pets take along with directions for giving those medications. Leave a note as to where the medication is located in your house.
  • the phone number of an emergency vet with directions on how to get there. (Go on Google Maps and print out a map to the location. It just takes a moment and it’s useful for you if you suddenly need to rush your dog to the vet on a Sunday afternoon. You don’t want to be figuring out where the emergency vet is and how to get there in the midst of an emergency!)
  • a list of your close neighbors and their phone numbers. If your pet is lost, these will be the first people your friends will call.
  • the locations in your house of kennels, leashes, pet carriers, etc. should the pets need to be removed from your house temporarily.
  • the phone number of a pet sitter you’ve used in the past.
  • a photograph of each pet in case the pet is lost.

Having everything in one central place makes the job much easier for family members that might need to come in without notice and care for your pets. Even when you’re home, it’s also helpful to have everything in one handy place in case of a pet emergency or lost pet.
