In our recent How to Raise a Perfect Dog giveaway, we asked readers for their tips on raising the perfect dog…and many of those tips dealt with health and safety. Check out these helpful reader tips on everything from check-ups to in-car safety.
Begin early to teach your dog to eat only from his dish. More dogs die needlessly from accidental poisoning. The perfect dog would not eat what is found on the ground or around the house. – EKC
Have an ongoing relationship with your veterinary doctor. A perfect dog sees the vet on a regular basis, so that if there is a crisis in health, there is a history to refer to. Behaviour is sometimes related to health issues. Regular check-ups can prevent problems arising. – EKC
A perfect dog begins with good health. Teach your pet from puppyhood never to drink standing water outdoors and only the drinking water you offer. — EKC
A dog that is not properly restrained during travel is a danger to itself and all passengers. During an accident your beloved pet becomes a deadly moving object. Train your dog early to a cage or purchased seat restraints. A perfect dog deserves protection and so do you! – EKC
Begin a health regimen the day the pup arrives…teeth brushing, hair brushing, clipping or shaping nails, standing on a table and so on. All these will need to be familiar events for your perfect dog. – EKC
Get your puppy used to be handled for brushing, nails, checking ears, teeth, etc. Do a little bit each day, associating it with something positive (no it doesn’t HAVE to be food), so when they are grown up, it isn’t a big deal. – MVG
Bach Flower Remedies! My dog has always been afraid of stepping on tile/linoleum and wood floors. She has never fully entered my kitchen until today, after 3 days of giving her the Bach Flower Remedy: Vine. I recommend these natural homeopathic remedies to anyone with a pet with a phobia or behavioral problem. I am amazed! – Arianna
