Whether your own dog or one you come upon along the roadside, all dog lovers worry that someday they may need to handle an injured dog. Do you know how to approach a wounded dog–especially one that does not know you?

Today’s tip comes from Oregon-based Informed Publishing, publishers of the Pet Emergency Pocket Guide, a tip that can keep the dog–and you–safe in such a situation:

In all cases when dealing with an injured animal, stay calm, and use as little force as necessary. The amount of restraint needed will vary based on the size of the dog, its behavior or condition, and whether or not anyone is assisting you. Speak with a quiet, calming voice to the injured animal, approaching from the rear in order to reduce your chances of being bitten. Never chase or grab an animal.

If you suspect major injury, spinal cord injury, or that the dog is unable to walk or move on its own without pain or further injury do not restrain: you will need to transport the animal immediately for veterinary care.
