Some of the best tips are ones that make you think, “Why didn’t I think of that?” We had one of those moments this weekend during the keynote speech by Dr. Temple Grandin at the annual conference at the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP). Grandin is a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University and the author of several books including Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals.
Much of Grandin’s research has including how to treat livestock in a humane way which can include steps as simple as making sure livestock are walking on non-slip surfaces. That same advice applies to taking your dog to the vet. To help make your dog’s experience on the vet’s examining table a good one, she suggested:
Bring a rubber-backed bathmat from home so [your dog] doesn’t worry he is going to fall.
A simple, no-cost solution to addressing the fear your dog has up on the table–with the non-slip backing, he feels confident he won’t fall during the exam (and he’s comforted by the scent of home.) Our favorite type of tip!
