Preparing for Skunk Sprays

This week we sat down to watch “24″ and to see if Jack Bauer would once again save the world…when suddenly our dog Tiki ran to the door, started barking, and wanted out NOW. We let her out and followed her onto the porch…and suddenly knew just what the object of that barking was…
A skunk in our yard had sprayed (and sprayed so close to the house that our eyes burned). Fortunately Tiki was far enough away (and so were we) that the spray didn’t get us directly.
But it made us both think what if we had been sprayed. We live in the country and spring means the wildlife is very active so we need to be ready for next time. It was time to purchase the ingredients for a skunk remedy. For each dog and for the two of us, we purchased:
- 1 quart 3 percent Hydrogen Peroxide
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 to 2 teaspoons liquid soap
It’s very important NOT to mix these ingredients until you need them…and to discard any leftover liquid when you’re done. Once the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda are mixed, it can explode if put into a closed container.
If you’re sprayed, just mix the ingredients (the liquid soap helps the mixture adhere to the hair better) and work it into the dog’s hair, always avoiding the eyes. Leave the mixture on for five minutes then rinse it off.
We’re putting all the ingredients in a plastic bucket and storing it in the pantry, along with a printout of this recipe. Better that than to need to make a quick run to the grocery store…wearing eau de skunk!
