We’re all looking for ways to save money these days…and that includes on our pet care. Today we’ve got a guest post from Andrew Salmon about top ways to save money on your pet:
Owning and caring for a pet has become a multi-billion dollar industry in recent years. And once you’ve bonded with that special creature, you’ll want to spoil him or her to your heart’s content. Well that will get pricey. Here are the top ways to save money on your pet.
6. Animal Shelters
Be sure the animal that has won your heart is safe to have around your kids and has been vaccinated and so on. Why pay large sums of money for special breeds? Lifelong companions can be had for free at your neighborhood shelter. And you’ll be saving a life. Your new friend will be eternally grateful.
5. The Right Food
Spending a little more on pet food hardly sounds like a way to save money but you’ve got to think long term here. Providing a healthy diet for your animal will help to prevent health issues down the road. Health problems that could run into high vet bills. Think of this as preventive dieting.
4. Knowledge is Power
Once you’ve brought your pet home, it’s time to hit the books. Get to the library and learn everything you can about the animal. Special diet or exercise needs you can see to yourself will not only ensure that the animal stays healthy and happy but will also keep you out of the vet’s waiting room.
3. Grooming
Again, the library or internet can be of service here. Instead of paying professionals for routine grooming necessities like fur trimming or nail cutting, learn to do these things yourself. You’ll save money and let your pet know how much you care at the same time. It’s another way to bond with the animal and isn’t that what it’s all about?
2. The Water Bowl
Money saving tips wont get any easier than this. Keep your pet’s water dish full at all times. Water is necessary to just about every bodily function and keeping your animal properly hydrated can prevent serious and non-serious ailments from afflicting your pet. And save you endless trips to the vet in the process. Also, if the animal stops drinking regularly, this could be the sign of illness you can nip in the bud before it worsens.
1. Craigslist
This should be your one stop shopping center for your pet. Leashes, pet carriers, food bowls, and so on are often offered at extremely affordable prices or, in many cases, free of charge. So stop here before you head out to the pet store. You’ll be giving your wallet a break, helping the environment and seeing that your pet lacks for nothing. How can you lose?
