Finding Dog Transports for Rescues

81746948.thbToday we received a very touching letter from a reader whose best friend in California had passed away. The friend had left behind a terrier, now homeless, and the reader wanted to adopt the dog. There’s only one problem: the dog is in California and the reader is in North Dakota and there’s no money for transport. The reader was hoping to get in touch with the transport company featured in Animal Planet’s Last Chance Highway series to see if they might be able to help. The popular Animal Planet series has brought to the attention of many people the existence of volunteer animal transports that work so hard to take pets from shelters, often in the southern portion of the US, to areas of the US where there’s more of a demand (and less of a supply) of adoptable animals.

Some transports can also help get a pet to its new adopted home. Thanks to the many great suggestions of DogTipper.com’s Facebook fans, we’ve got several good resources to pass along to our reader. If you know of some other transport options, please leave them in the comments section below to help everyone who might be facing a similar situation!

Dog Rescue Railroad

This company performs cross-country rescue transports. Their busy Yahoo groups page is available for posting animals that need transporting.

Operation Roger…Truckers Pet Transport

This rescue operation, an all-volunteer effort, teams animals needing transport with truckers who might be traveling the route, or part of the route. Sometimes animals are transported using the efforts of several truckers. To list an animal for transport, there’s a $25 donation then, after a few days, the listing is sent to the team.

P.E.T.S. LLC

Well known for its work on the Last Chance Highway series, this effort has transport tens of thousands of pets since it began work in 2004. This site has some good guidelines and tips for anyone considering transport work.

Rescue Waggin’

This PetSmart Charities transport charity operates in the East Coast, Midwest, Great Plains and South Central regions of the U.S.

Truck ‘n Paws

This volunteer transport company carries pets to areas where they’ll find new homes using a network of over 3,200 members. You’ll find some excellent guidelines on this site for transporting animals if you’ve every considering helping with transports.

Do you know of some other good pet transports? Please share the name and a link, if you have it, below!
