In last week’s nutrition tip, canine nutrition expert Tracie Hotchner discussed the importance of feeding your dog fewer carbohydrates and more protein. This week, Tracie discusses identifying the types of carbohydrates and knowing which is best for your dog:
Carbohydrates fall into two groups: simple or complex. The simple carbohydrates (also called simple sugars) break down to glucose for a quick energy supply to the body, but with a spike in the blood sugar. It’s healthier for your dog to eat complex carbs in the form of vegetables and whole grains like oatmeal, rice and barley – which are fiber-rich and facilitate your dog’s absorption of nutrients while helping the body digest and eliminate.
