We’re starting a new section here on DogTipper, answering your reader questions. Send in your question through our contact form and we’ll seek out the experts in the canine world–whether that’s in the field of nutrition, training, safety, grooming, you name it–for their expert advice and tips.

We launch this new column with a nutritional and health question about special diets for dogs with cancer:

Question: My dog has canine cancer. I understand that a grain-free diet could help her and would like to know if this is true and if a grain-free diet could keep her healthier for a longer period. Are there other things I should be changing in her diet?

Answer from Scott Freeman, developer of Nature’s Logic 100% Natural Pet Foods: There are a number of prescription diets on the market for pets with cancer. These diets, as well as grain-free formulas, are all high in protein and low in carbohydrates and sugar, the pet food features that seem to be the most recommended for pets with cancer. However there are a few high-quality foods, other than grain-free, that also meet the criteria of being rich in protein and low in carbohydrates. Look for foods with 30% or more protein guaranteed on the bag, and make sure that the protein comes from meat, poultry or fish. Also look for a food with a starch that is low in sugar and carbohydrates, like millet, and avoid pet foods with wheat, gluten or soy in the ingredient panel.

There is another consideration for owners of pets with cancer, or those who want to prevent it in their dogs and cats. Studies by the U.S. National Cancer Institute have shown a relationship between vitamin supplements and cancer in humans. Chemically-synthesized vitamins and minerals often contain unwanted and potentially toxic ingredients (more on this topic).  Pets are exposed to these risk factors in all commercial pet foods containing “added vitamins and minerals.” When consumers see this phrase on pet food labels, it tells them that the added vitamins and minerals are man-made, or chemically-synthesized. Nature’s Logic foods, on the other hand, provide all essential vitamins and minerals from whole food and 100% natural ingredients, making them a good choice for pets with cancer.

About Nature’s Logic: Nature’s Logic is committed to providing the highest quality and safest nutrition for dogs and cats. The company has created the first and only full-line kibble, canned, and raw frozen pet food in the world with no chemically-synthesized ingredients. Nature’s Logic is the pioneer in developing truly 100% natural pet foods derived from nature…not chemistry. For more information, please visit www.natureslogic.com.

My dogs do not have cancer but the one dog had infections after ear infection after ear infections due to the grain. I have my dogs on Grain Free Fromm Dog Food. My one dog has not had an infection since I took him off dog food with grain. Plus their coat is so soft and health. They are also on raw meat diet plus the Fromm. You can go to Fromm website and read about the dog food.

At our store we always recommend Nature’s Logic for ANY cancer paitent or certain breeds such as Boxers or Golden Retrievers. “Grain-Free” foods are a good choice and here is why staying away from the foods with grain can be harmful. The body turns Simple Carbohydrates such as corn, rice, oatmeal, etc. into sugar and sugar feeds cancer. BUT did you know that Millet contains less sugar than Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes or Tapioca? These are the binders that MOST “Grain-Free” foods use. SO if your pet has cancer or is a breed that often gets cancer then Nature’s Logic with Millet is the best choice when comparing it to a “Grain-Free” food.

Our dog was diagnosed with small Tcell lymphoma just after New Year’s Day. Petting her one evening, I felt the lymph nodes in her neck, which were the size of kumquats…as were those in her back legs. We were devastated. After research, we switched her to Wellness Core low carb food. And we began supplements of Evening Primrose oil, Omega 3, and Aloha Medicinals’ “K9 Immunity and Transfer Factor”. Within a week, the nodes had shrunk back to normal size…even before she began chemo on 1/28. She is now on Leukeran and Prednisone, continuing the supplements, and is doing beautifully, with no side effects. And we were encouraged to continue the grain-free diet. She returns to the oncologist on 2/28. I would urge everyone to look into K9 Immunity and Transfer Factor. Our oncologist believes it has made a tremendous difference.
