Ask Alecia: Books to Help Children Train Dogs?

Dear Alecia,

Are there any books/videos that show how to include elementary school kids in the training process?  Something at the elementary school level? My sister got a dog from the shelter.  When we visit, it is clear the dog can learn.  My sister has also done basic training with the dog (come, sit).  When we try to get the kids involved it is not happening.  We believe we are not presenting it correctly at the kids level.

Hi,

Great question.  I love teaching kids to work with puppies and dogs.  Kids are so cool and so creative and are generally more psychic with dogs.  It is imperative that all households with children teach the kids how to be leaders to the dog and how to treat them humanely.

I recommend you read The Right Way The First Time by Alana Stevenson  with your kids.  In addition you can pick up the DVD Dog Training for Children by Dr. Ian Dunbar so the kids can have a visual.

With kids I find it is imperative to tell, demonstrate and supervise with simple reminders so that the kids have the chance to try it out and you can provide the safety zone buffer.  You will be on double duty because you will be focusing the dog and the kids at the same time, so take a deep breath, be patient and clear and have fun!

Paws Up!
