What Are the Best Ingredients to Be Listed on a Bag of Dog Food?

Today we continue our series of reader questions with Dr. Tiffany Bierer:

What are the best three ingredients to be listed on bags of dog food and snacks?

Dr. Bierer: Good nutrition is complex and can be provided by a variety of ingredients.  There isn’t any one or two ingredients that are better than all the rest, it is about the quality and combination of the ingredients we use to deliver the best nutrition possible.  That is one of the reasons that I am proud to work for MARS Petcare.  We are committed to putting the pets’ needs first and have extensive quality and formulation programs to make sure that every diet that we make incorporates the latest nutritional knowledge and provides pets with the best nutrition.  Pets are part of our lives and our families and making products that keep them happy and healthy is what makes me happy to come to work every day.

There is a lot of confusion over the different ingredients used in pet foods and what nutrition they provide.  Corn, for example, provides a great source of highly digestible protein as well as fiber, essential fatty acids and antioxidants.  By-product meals, such as poultry product meal, is a concentrated source of nutrients.  It incorporates not only meat but also organ meats (like liver and kidney) and bone.  The organ meats are an important component because they contribute higher, naturally occurring levels of vitamins and minerals.  For more information on ingredients like corn and by-products, visit http://www.pedigree.com/really-good-food/ingredients.aspx

Dr. Tiffany Bierer is the health and nutrition sciences manager for Mars Petcare US, makers of PEDIGREE® Food for Dogs, CESAR® Brand, WHISKAS® Food for Cats, THE GOODLIFE RECIPE® Brand, TEMPTATIONS® Treats for Cats and CRAVE® Treats for Cats.
