Why Are So Many Dogs Allergic?

Today we continue with our series of reader questions for Dr. Tiffany Bierer:

Why are so many dogs becoming allergic to grain products? What are we doing now that we did not do say 20 years ago?

Our knowledge of dog and cat health care and nutrition has greatly expanded over the last 20 years making the way we care for and feed our pets today even better. There are many different diets on the market now because dogs and cats (and their owners!) have individual needs and preferences and no one diet is perfect for every pet.

As far as food allergies in pets, the incidence of true, diagnosed food allergies is low and diagnosis is very difficult and time consuming. If you believe your pet has a food allergy or intolerance, work with your Veterinarian to try and determine exactly what is causing the problem. Many times people believe their dog has a food allergy when the true cause of the problem with their pet is something else. Taking the time to understand the true cause will help you to better take care of your pet over his or her lifetime.
