As you know, we travel with our dogs a LOT. In writing our Texas with Dogs book, we took them near and far this past year, and we had an absolutely great time. On our weekly Dog Travel Experts radio show, we’re always discussing how much the dogs add to even the simplest of trips.
But they’re not always able to travel with us. Sometimes we travel for business. Sometimes we have to tend to issues with distant elderly relatives in nursing homes where dogs could not visit. Sometimes we have to travel to large cities where we know our country dogs would not be happy. We know they’d happier at home in these cases.
So what’s the answer? A pet sitter.
Pet sitters can stay in your home or pets can stay in the pet sitter’s home, whichever is the best solution. For us, pet sitting is ALWAYS the best option for Irie and Tiki as well as for our four cats for a number of reasons. First, the numbers: a pet sitter for six pets is generally less expensive than pet boarding for all six.
But that’s definitely not the main reason. We always choose pet sitting over pet boarding because we know it will make our pets happiest…and what makes them happy makes us happy. We want to head off on our trip–whether for work, family, or business–without endless worries about their safety and happiness. With a dependable pet sitter, we can put that concern out of our minds and tend to the business of our trip.
Also, both Irie and Tiki spent considerable time in pet shelters before their adoptions. It would break our hearts to leave them at a traditional kennel that would be all too similar to a shelter in their minds.
Finally, we have two senior cats, both on daily medication, that would be stressed by a boarding environment and whose health could suffer due to that stress.
Nope, we just can’t do it.
So we always opt for a pet sitter, and we always have through our 20+ years of travel and guidebook writing. With a dog sitter, we can can make sure each pet’s individual needs are met, whether that’s morning medication or an afternoon belly rub. We know we have an individual just a phone call away if we need to put our minds at rest. And we know we’re working with a fellow pet lover.
In the next few weeks, we’re going to be writing a series of articles about Rover.com and how this innovative company has streamlined the business of finding and hiring a responsible, reliable pet sitter. We’ll learn more about how we can all locate a great pet sitter both at home and on the road, if you’re traveling with your pets and find that you need to leave them for a while. We’ll explore Rover’s Peace of Mind Protection™ in case of an emergency vet visit–and we’ll learn about some Rover sitters with additional protection plans as well. And we’ll discuss how you can select THE best pet sitter for you and your dogs with tips on talking with pet sitters and working with a pet sitter.
