Keeping Your Dog Safe on New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve might be fun for us but it’s a tough holiday for dogs. Fireworks are more than a nuisance to many dogs; for some, they cause terrible fear that makes them bolt, running away from the frightening noise that seems to come from everywhere.
To keep your dog safe this New Year’s Eve:
- Make sure your dog is indoors tonight. Even if there are no scheduled fireworks shows in your area, you don’t know when someone might unexpectedly set off some fireworks and frighten your dog. If you are going out for the evening, it’s doubly important for your dog to be indoors or safely boarded.
- Make sure your dog is tagged! Like the Fourth of July, many dogs go missing on New Year’s Eve, bolting from the sound of the fireworks and getting lost in the confusion of in-house parties. Be sure your dog has his collar and current tags on tonight! No tag? Take a marker and write your last name and phone number on the collar itself. Can’t write on the collar? Make a sleeve from a light-colored, solid fabric like an old sheet, slip it over your dog’s collar, and write your information on it.
- Don’t take your dog along to any fireworks shows or have him nearby if your family sets off any fireworks.
- Keep alcohol away from your dog! Alcohol can be toxic to dogs (and those goes for other party fare like chocolates, raisin baked goods, macadamia nuts, and more). If you have guests over for the evening, keep your dog crated or in another room, safely away from an unsupervised drink.
