Digs for The Traveling Dog
Visitors to Carmel-by-the-Sea can let sleeping dogs lie at any one of Carmel’s Fido-friendly hotels. Since 1986 the 44-room, Doris Day-owned Cypress Inn has offered a pet paradise where booking a room for you and your barking buddy brings the promise of dog blankets, beds, bowls and biscuits.
A number of other notable hotels in the city have “gone to the dogs,” including the Briarwood Inn, Carmel Country Inn, Coachman’s Inn. Happy Landing Inn, Hofsas House, Lamp Lighter Inn, Lincoln Green Inn, Tradewinds Carmel, and Vagabond’s House Inn, to name a few.
Sightseeing with Your Pawed Pal
Your pup can put on the dog at Carmel Plaza, home to over 50 shops that are passionate about pooches. While perusing for purchases for your pooch, be sure to stop by the Plaza’s tribute to man’s best friend– The Fountain of Woof.
For an outdoor adventure, let your four-footed friend run roam free at Carmel Beach, a leash-optional area.
Your four-legged chum will love to chomp down on the doggie delicacies offered at many of the town’s restaurants. Order a Hot Diggity Dog or a Quarter Hounder, just two of the canine culinary treats listed on the “Dog Pound” menu at The Forge In The Forest (photos).
Puppies dining at Porta Bella restaurant will feel like they’re living the life of Riley as they lap up water from a champagne bucket, and Le Coq D’or provides doggie bags filled with treats. Canines also get the VIP (very important pooch) treatment at Allegro Gourmet and Bahama Billy’s at The Barnyard Shopping Village, and at Anton & Michel restaurant, Casanova and Grasings.
