Now in its eighth year, May 17, 2009 marks the annual family fundraiser for New Leash on Life: the Nuts for Mutts Dog Show and Pet Fair. The event features a full day of dog events and a long list of celebrity judges.
Activities: The event will include:
- a mixed breed dog show
- pet adoptions
- vendors showcasing products ranging from healthy dog treats to pet carriers
- live music
- kid’s corner and more
Since its inception in 2001, Nuts for Mutts has grown every year. This year, hundreds of canines are expected to strut their stuff before a panel of celebrity judges in such categories as “Fastest Mutt,’ “Most Ear-resistible Ears” and “Best Kisser” leading up to the coveted “Best in Show.”
Benefit: Nuts for Mutts benefits New Leash on Life, which since its founding 1997 has spayed and neutered thousands of pets, rescued and placed over 3,000 dogs, provided free educational seminars at local shelters and schools, helped set shelter rescue priorities on “hard to place” animals requiring medical or special care, founded the P.E.T.’s program (Pet Educational Trainers), training and placement of Assistance and Therapy Dogs (Lend A Paw Program) and co-founded Partners for Life which saved hundreds at the East Valley Animal Shelter.
Celebrity Judges: This year’s celebrity judges include actress and legal commentator Vicki Roberts (Celebrity Justice, Jury Duty), comedian Rip Taylor; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek), Sprague Graydon (24), actress Shirley Jones, Mark Thompson (Mark & Brian/KLOS-FM), Ian Somerhalder (Lost), Lisa Joyner (TV Guide Host), Patrick Fischlero (Mad Men), and pet-friendly Los Angeles City Councilmember Dennis Zine. Actress-comedienne Debra Wilson Skelton (MADtv) and Nicole Sullivan (King of Queens) return to emcee the event.
Admission: Tickets are available in advance at www.nutsformutts.org or at the door for $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors 55 and over and free for children age 12 and under. Dogs are $5. To register your dog in the competition, visit the Nuts for Mutts website. Plenty of free parking is available.
