Looking for some indoor fun that’s dog-related in these late summer weeks? chec out the salute to four-legged friends in Salado, Texas. The Salado Silver Spur Theater serves up an all-new show, “Gone to the Dogs,” with vaudeville-style variety acts and classic silent cinema.

“It also will benefit homeless dogs in Central Texas, since a portion of the ticket proceeds will be donated to area animal shelters and humane societies,” explained Grainger Esch, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Silver Spur. “Before show times, adoptable pets will be on the theater grounds, courtesy of various shelters – Salado Humane Society, Forgotten Friends Rescue of Leander and the Bell Area Animal Shelter.

The Show: The Players include seasoned veterans of Ringling Bros. (Circus) and Barnum & Bailey’s Clown Alley, and others. Each weekend of the five-week run will feature a special guest performer from the world of variety entertainment. These special guests include cowgirl rope spinner and comedienne Karen Quest, a West Coast-based entertainer who has been blazing a trail with her one-woman act featuring rope spinning, whip cracking, improvisation, audience participation and lots of kooky cowgirl shenanigans specially crafted for family audiences.

“A Dog’s Life” On screen will be a “reel gem” from the silent movie era: Charlie Chaplin in “A Dog’s Life,” his first written, produced and directed movie for First National Films in 1918. In the classic short comedy, Chaplin’s “Little Tramp” character shares his homelessness with an adorable mutt named Scraps. The “flicker” will be presented in true Silver Spur fashion, with live musical accompaniment arranged and performed by the Silver Spur’s accompanist with live sound effects performed by the Spur-radicals on authentic, vaudeville-era instruments.
