Keeping Your Dog’s Head Inside the Car

Dogs love to hang their heads out the car window. The rushing air brings a flurry of new scents that make the experience so very exciting.
And so very dangerous.
Although it’s seen all too often, allowing your dog to hang his head out the window while you drive is as unwise as allowing your child to sit up on their knees and hang out the car window.
First, it’s all too easy for flying debris to hit your dog in the eye. Even a small insect can embed itself in your dog’s eye; larger objects can easily blind your dog.
Next, a dog’s head can easily be caught between your car and another car passing too closely. And what if you suddenly swerved to avoid a wreck and sideswiped a utility pole while your dog’s head was outside the vehicle?
Also, sudden movements (or an all-too-tempting distraction) and quick stops can send your dog flying or jumping out the car. And if you should find yourself involved in a fender bender or worse, in the first moments of confusion it’s all too easy for your dog to hop out into traffic.
It’s always recommended that you keep your dog completely inside the car at all times (even better: make sure he’s buckled up using a dog restraint system or doggie seat belt!) If you crack the windows a couple of inches, he’ll enjoy all the fun of that outdoor air rushing by…and none of the hazards!
