Following the broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, “The National Dog Show” is broadcast to an audience of nearly 19 million viewers, making it America’s most watched dog show. The show features a Best in Show competition and plenty of observations on man’s best friend by host John O’Hurley and expert analyst David Frei.
The Show: The show features the annual Kennel Club of Philadelphia (KCP) Dog Shows, a tradition that started in 1879. The shows took place Nov. 14 and 15, and featured some 2,000 purebred canines. The show features $20,000 in prize money.
On TV: Returning this year to host the TV show is the renowned comedic actor, author, canine aficionado and TV personality John O‚Hurley. He will be joined by expert analyst David Frei, who is an AKC-licensed judge and host of USA Network’s “The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.” This year’s show features three new AKC-recognized breeds. You’ll also have a chance to see Rufus (photo, above), the National Dog Show canine ambassador, who holds the honor of being the only dog to win both the National Dog Show and Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Rufus now has a career as a therapy dog.
Online Coverage: To complement the TV special and showcase all the breeds on Thanksgiving Day, NBCSports.com will feature video of the walks, examination and judging of all the breed-winning dogs with expert commentary from veteran announcer and dog show expert Wayne Ferguson, who is the President of the host Kennel Club of Philadelphia.
The television broadcast will also be available online after 2 p.m. ET on Hulu.com, a popular online video service that offers hit TV shows, movies and clips. The online coverage will also feature Tiffany Simons of NBCSports.com, who will provide on-site features and interviews from the show.
