What: Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

When: Feb. 15-16, 2010

Where: Madison Square Garden, New York City

Over 170 breeds of dogs will compete at this year’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, one of the world’s best known dog events. This year, three new breeds recently recognized by the American Kennel Club will compete for the first time: the Irish Red and White Setter in the Sporting Group, and the Pyrenean Shepherd and the Norwegian Buhund in the Herding Group.

The event concludes with the seven winners in the Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding Groups competing for Best in Show, judged this year by Elliott Weiss of Eagle, Idaho. Last year’s winner was 10-year-old Stump (seen above making a special appearance at the Houston dog show), a Sussex Spaniel.

Televised Coverage: Even if you can’t make the live two-day event, you can watch the live coverage on Monday and Tuesday evenings, February 15-16, 2010 from 8pm to 11pm ET on the USA Network.

Everyone roared when Stump won – a 10 year old dog had never won before. I had to watch live coverage this year, but it was still. The toy group kept me rivited – I was sure the Chinese Crested would have won. No dice, maybe next year.
