World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, June 25, 2010, Petaluma, CA

Proving that a dog doesn’t have to be picture perfect to be the perfect pet, the parade of paws that promenade on stage at the Sonoma-Marin Fair’s annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest defines the old adage, “pretty is as pretty does.”

Jon Reep, the season five winner of NBC’s rib-tickling talent competition Last Comic Standing, will emcee the 22nd edition of the event on June 25, 2010, while Karen “Doc” Halligan– who has shared her puppy expertise on Animal Rescue 911, Dog Tales, Groomer Has It and Dogs 101– along with HawthoRNe cast member Christina Moore and Vertical Horizon lead singer Matt Scannell will, as the celebrity judges, select the top “Spot” from the roundup of rare barking beauties.

This year’s reigning Rover will follow in the pawprints of previous winners:

• Pabst (photo, below), a boxer mix who was adopted from a shelter
• Rascal, an African Sand Dog whose claim to fame has led to YouTube videos and his own brand of signature hot dog leashes
• the late, great Miss Ellie, a Chinese Crested who crossed rainbow bridge in 2010 at the age of 17.

The top tail-wagger, who will make the rounds on the talk show circuit, will receive $1,000, a trophy, a photo session with Grace Chon of Shine Pet Photos, and a modeling contract with House of Dog as well as collars, leashes, bowls, toys and a carrier from the company.
