Britcom fans may know him as misanthropic Dr. Martin Ellingham, but fans of Fidos know Doc Martin star Martin Clunes from his real life role as an animal advocate. Over the years the actor has actively shown his support for such organizations as ACE Animal Care in Egypt, the Born Free Foundation and the Dog Rescue Foundation, and this summer the doggedly devoted actor will once again use his star wattage to help rescue Rovers shine in the spotlight.
Held on grounds owned by Clunes and his wife, producer Philippa Braithwaite, for the second year the Buckham Fair fundraiser in Beaminster will include a Best Dog Rescue championship. On August 18th the actor will be among a group of four judges who will determine the day’s top dogs, who will not only win prizes for his or her pet parents, but also cash awards for registered dog charities of the guardian’s choice.
Last year’s champion was Henry, who was once an abandoned English Springer Spaniel battling weight loss, a stomach ailment and severe anxiety when he was rescued by Dogs4Adoption, the organization which helped him find a loving forever Mom. Today a healthy, happy Medical Alert Assistance dog who has twice saved the life of his diabetic pet parent, Henry had the chance to offer assistance to the charity that once helped him with a donation of his first place prize money.
Spots can earn their spot in the competition at one of 13 qualifying events, which will take place in Dorset, Devon and Somerset over the next few months.
