Soon to be seen on the big screen as a demi-god famed for his physical power, off-screen Hercules: The Legend Begins star Kellan Lutz recently displayed his strength of character by helping Bulgarian dogs in need.
During a one-day break in filming the upcoming action flick, the Twilight franchise cast member and fellow Hercules stars Johnathon Schraech, Gaia Weiss, Sarai Givaty, producer Gisella Marengo and director Renny Harlin used their combined star wattage to shine a spotlight on the plight of the country’s stray dogs and the no-kill shelter that is offering animals hope for a better tomorrow.
More than 500 canines are currently receiving comfort and care at Animal Rescue Sofia, an organization which finds forever homes for both abandoned dogs and cats; offers free spaying and neutering and uses a trap/neuter/release method to help curb the overpopulation situation. (According to the Sofia News Agency, there are currently 6,635 stray dogs living in the Bulgarian capital.)
Unfortunately, the shelter is now in need of rescue, as Animal Rescue Sofia will soon no longer be allowed to operate from its currently location. The rescue is striving to obtain 210,000 euros by the end of 2013 in an effort to purchase a nearby farm, where the organization’s volunteers can continue their efforts.
