The dream of a better life for homeless dogs in the Los Angeles area may not happen overnight, but on June 12th and 13th reverie will come one step closer to becoming reality when a group of volunteers with a vision spend the span of 24 hours in kennels for a Sleepover at the Shelter.
A happening with heart made possible through a partnership between Bark Avenue Foundation, the national TV documentary series Shelter Me and the Downey Animal Care Center (one of six animal shelter in the Los Angeles County area), several celebrity supporters– including actor/Kids Against Animal Cruelty founder Lou Wegner, reality TV star Rob Cesternino (Survivor: The Amazon and Survivor: All-Stars), comedienne Aubrey Sweeney and L.A. weatherman Garth Kemp of ABC7 News– will be among those participating in the event. The volunteers will stay in three separate “kennels” (the Downey shelter’s fenced in play yards next to the dog kennels) and bond with our buddies who bark while promoting the option of adoption via webcams and social media and raising funds for a paws cause.
Hoping to raise $30,000, which will translate into 400 free spay/neuter surgeries, microchips and vaccinations for pets in communities served by Downey Animal Care Center which are facing financial difficulties, the pup-loving public are invited to play a part in the success of the sleepover by pledging money for the number of hours a volunteer stays in the kennel.
June 13th will mark not only the dawn of a new day, but also of a new life for many of the shelter’s animals as dogs, cats and rabbits in need of forever homes find pet parents to love during an adoption event at the Downey Animal Care Center as the sleepover wraps up.
When: June 12 – 13, 2015 (The sleepover starts at 11 a.m. on June 12th; pet adoption event takes place June 13th)
Where: Downey Animal Care Center at 11258 South Garfield Avenue in Downey, California
