71*365: Using the Portrait Setting

Share with fellow dog lovers!

While it’s tempting to put your camera on auto, you’ve got some preset options that are just as easy to use and can help you get the photo you’re seeking.

Today I used the “portrait” mode on my camera. Your camera probably has this setting; look for a little silhouette of a head. This preset mode gives you a shallow depth of field which helps put the emphasis on the subject, creating a portrait without the distractions of an in-focus background.

You’ll see in the photo above that Irie’s eyes are in focus but by the time you get to her shoulder the focus is soft. The grass background is very blurry, showing the shallow depth of field.

Give your portrait mode a try! It works well for a portrait of just one dog; if you have several dogs in one photo or a dog and a person, it may not work because of the shallow depth of field.

Have you used your camera’s portrait mode? If so, please share you photo below (just click the “+” link in the comments box.)
