Remember that children’s game where you tried to locate an object and the other player directed you with calls of “you’re getting warmer” or “your getting colder”?
Getting the lighting in your photos just right can be a little bit like that game. Because each type of light photographs differently, it’s a balancing game trying to find just the right balance between warm and cold.
Here’s an example. We’re doing a before and after shoot for HomeGoods and this is the before, straight out of the camera:
This photo has four light sources: daylight coming in the window, incandescent light in the ceiling fan light and the lamp, and florescent light. Each photographs as a different color.
You can warm up the entire photo:
To me, it’s getting a little too yellow.
Or you can try cooler tones:
That removes the yellow tinge…but the florescent light starts getting really green. (It’s tough to judge the colors, though, because the walls are green, too.)
So what did I do? I decided to lighten the photo then use an “auto tone” option:
I think it’s somewhere between the two and looks more natural!
There’s never one perfect solution for the lighting on those indoor photos…but it’s fun to experiment!
