Title: Our Rescue Dog Family Album
Author: Dr. Diane Pomerance
DogTipper Review: Our family has included a number of rescue dogs over the years. In fact, all but one of our canines came to us either from shelters or by being dumped near our country home. We are always interested in other individuals who adopt and care for unwanted pets. So, we were immediately impressed by Dr. Diane Pomerance’s recent book, Our Rescue Dog Family Album. (Dr. Pomerance answers reader questions here on DogTipper in her “Ask Dr. Diane” column; you can send her your question, too.)
Dr. Pomerance is a nationally-recognized pet expert who works with several pet organizations including the SPCA of Texas, K-9 Friends Visiting Therapy Dogs of GTDOG, as well as the Alaskan Malamute Assistance League. She is a PhD in Communication and is certified as a Grief Recovery Specialist, specializing in the process of healing after the loss of a pet. Some of her other books include the children’s book, When Your Pet Dies, as well as Animal Companions: Your Friends, Teachers & Guides, Animal Companions: In Our Hearts, Our Lives & Our World, Animal Elders: Caring About Our Aging Animal Companions, Finding Peace After the Loss of a Loved Animal Companion, and her most recent book, Pet Parenthood: Adopting the Right Animal Companion for You.
Our Rescue Dog Family Album is a handsomely printed hardback which documents some of the many dogs who have been adopted into her loving home over the years.
This entertaining book is enhanced with color photos of her pets and details her and her husband, Norman’s day-by-day efforts to save as many distressed dogs as possible. Their gradual introduction and integration into the lives of abandoned and mistreated pets is an inspiring journey. As Dr. Pomerance explains,
“We never deliberately set out to ‘save’ or ‘rescue’ dogs. Yet, somehow, providing care for, adopting, and rehabilitating animals in need has become a way of life for my husband and me…Although there is so much sadness and often horrible suffering of the animals who come into our lives, we are so gratified by and amazed at the manner in which they generally recover from abuse, neglect and abandonment, and the joy and beauty of their journey…Each and every day of our lives is a celebration of life.”
The Pomerances’ inspiring story is a quick read, but will long linger in the hearts of all dog lovers.
