Dog-Friendly Attractions

Lost Maples State Natural Area. When you think of Texas, you probably don’t picture fall color but this state park will show you that, yes, you can do some leaf peeping in the Lone Star State. Heavily visited in October and November when the bigtooth maples provide some of the best color in the state, this park can limit weekend visitors to 250 cars to keep the park from getting overcrowded. You and your dog will be happiest during an autumn visit with a weekday trip, if you can, when you can walk your dog on the miles of trails, camp, and photograph the fall colors. As at all state parks, dogs must remain on a leash no longer than six feet and are not permitted in buildings. Info: 37221 FM 187; (830) 966-3413; www.tpwd.state.tx.us. Fee.

Dog-friendly Accommodations

*DogTipper Choice Foxfire Log Cabins. Many of the cabins at this resort along the Sabinal River are dog-friendly, charging a $10 per pet, per night fee along with a $50 deposit for damages. Located just a mile from Lost Maples State Park, the resort makes a convenient home base for your trip although, with a look at the beautiful swimming hole at this property, it might be tough to pull yourself away! Each cabin has two bedrooms, one bath and also a furnished kitchen (no microwave). You’ll also find a wood-burning fireplace as well as a fire ring outdoors (although don’t worry that you’ll have to snuggle with Fido to stay warm; the cabins also have window unit heaters). Info: 117 Olsen Ranch Rd., Vanderpool; (830) 966-2200 or (877) 966-8200; www.foxfirecabins.com.
