The starting pitcher for the San Diego Padres has stepped up to the plate to help dogs and cats in need by pitching the option of pet adoption to the public.

Tyson Ross has teamed up with Petco to promote the Think Adoption First celebrity video series, which features high profile pals to those with paws and the rescue pets who star in their lives. In Ross’s video the athlete introduces fans to the dog he says “Let’s play ball!” to after a day on the baseball diamond– Maverick, a Pit Bull mix who Ross saved from the streets.

Petco and the Petco Foundation partners with thousands of animal welfare groups across the country and through in-store adoption events finds forever families for more than 400,000 companion animals annually as a part of the Think Adoption First initiative. Reaching out to potential pet parents, the new video series will help to spread the word about the 6 – 8 million dogs and cats in the U.S. shelter system who are hoping to find a home.

Other animal-loving athletes are also encouraging people who are thinking about adopting a dog or cat to get in the game and choose an animal in need. In the days ahead DogTipper will showcase Think Adoption First videos from Surfing Hall of Fame member Taylor Knox, professional skateboarder and rally cross driver Bucky Lasek and roller derby athlete Bonnie Thunders.
