DogTipper Review: Just like potty training a human baby, housetraining a puppy is an important part of development. Housetraining is a job that takes some care as pet parents learn to anticipate their puppy’s needs and work them into a schedule to prevent accidents in the house. Here at DogTipper, one of the most common letters we receive from dog lovers is regarding puppy accidents in the house. Sadly, too, one of the top reasons dogs are surrendered to shelters is because people are unsuccessful in their housetraining.

Because of this, we were eager to test the Puppy Housetraining Kit from Simple Solution. Within this kit (all contained in an easy to carry plastic tote), puppy owners will find four must-have items:

  • The Unofficial Guide to Housetraining Your Puppy, a 36-page book with housetraining tips
  • Simple Solution Training Pads (14 pack)
  • Simple Solution Stain & Odor Remover (32-ounce spray)
  • Bags on Board Waste Pick-up Dispenser

The Simple Solution Training Pads are made with a plastic backing that holds urine so it doesn’t soil the carpet beneath; we also liked that the pads contain a special scent to encourage your puppy to come to the pad and urinate on it. Accidents do happen, of course, so the Simple Solution Stain & Odor Remover is another important item in the kit. (Read our separate review of this handy cleaner for puppy and all pet households.) The kit includes a bonus item: the Bags on Board Waste Pick-Up Dispenser containing poop pick up bags for those puppy walks.

But one of our favorite items in the kit was The Unofficial Guide to Housetraining Your Puppy. Easy to read, this booklet explains everything from planning ahead for your puppy and starting off on the right paw on day 1, how to use training pads, how to use a crate, staying on schedule, and what to expect at every stage of your puppy’s development. We were especially happy to see the section on training adopted adult dogs. The final section of the booklet addresses common housetraining problems such as “My puppy doesn’t want to go,” “My dog sneaks away to eliminate,” and “My dog refuses to use his special spot.”

This handy kit gets a definite paws up for helping to educate puppy parents about a very important part of their pup’s development and to clean up the messes along the way!
