DogTipper Review: OK, let’s get one thing straight right away: bathing our dogs is definitely a DIY affair. No groomers or salons or doggie spas. Our budget likes it that way. Our dogs (especially Irie, who is very shy) like it that way.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t want to pamper our dogs and have them smelling like they’ve just stepped out of the doggie spa!

Recently we received a review sample of Viva La Dog SPA’s Oatmeal Shampoo. Like the other shampoos, conditioners, grooming spritzes and facial wipes produced by this company, the Oatmeal Shampoo is designed to be used at home or for you to take to your dog’s stylist or groomer. This past weekend, with 80+ degree temperatures, we put it to the test.

The Oatmeal Shampoo is formulated with oatmeal and aloe vera to soothe itchy dog skin…whether that means hot spots, insect bites or dry skin (and don’t we all have that after the winter months?) Irie hasn’t seemed particularly itchy but we’re always especially watchful of her skin since she did have demodectic mange when we adopted her. (No sign of any return, knock on wood, but we always keep a good eye on her skin.)

Irie, a hound-lab mix, has short (you could even say bristly) hair that gets oily. As I’ve done before with her baths, I first took a gallon jug of warm water, added a few drops of shampoo, shook it up, and poured it over her, head to tail, to start to break up that oil before I began the bath.

What struck me first about the shampoo was its light, tropical scent (it includes coconut cleansers). My second impression: this shampoo lathered up very well:

I shampooed Irie twice then rinsed her then, of course, stood back:

The real benefit of the shampoo wasn’t apparent until that evening when I was sitting on the couch watching TV with Irie. She was SOFT. I mean really, really soft. Irie’s short hair has never been soft (and sometimes makes me itch when she rubs against me.)

It has now been two days since Irie’s bath and she is *still* super soft! I can’t believe how good her fur feels!

A huge thumbs up for Viva La Dog SPA Oatmeal Shampoo!
