DogTipper Review: Don’t look now, but warmer weather is on the horizon. That means it’s time to prepare for the next flea and tick season. Here in the Southwest, these pests can be a problem year-round, but Spring’s warming temperatures and showers really gets them hopping. Like many pet parents, we don’t use chemical insecticides or other poisons on our yard or in our house, opting for safer alternatives. Our strategy has been to treat both our yard and our pets themselves with the safest products we can find.

We’ve written before about using beneficial nematodes and diatomaceous earth on our outdoor areas, and we think that that approach has worked for us. But, a comprehensive strategy of controlling these blood-sucking pests also requires treating our pets themselves. So, we were glad to hear about Ark Naturals’ herbal-based repellent, Flea Flicker! Tick Kicker!, part of a comprehensive product line of all-natural pet wellness formulas designed to address many common pet health issues.

Flea Flicker! Tick Kicker! is a liquid spray which is designed to be applied directly to a dog’s (or cat’s) fur. The pleasant-smelling spray’s active ingredients are geraniol (derived from geraniums), eugenol (from cloves) and peppermint. The formula also contains water, isopropyl alcohol and glycerine. All ingredients are rated to be human-grade materials labeled as GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) ingredients by the EPA and FDA. The spray smells great and our dogs didn’t mind the odor one bit. (Unlike some products, this one contains no citronella, which most dogs hate.)

Directions say that the spray should be applied to a dog’s dry fur until the fur is damp, avoiding face and genital areas. The manufacturer suggests using Flea Flicker! Tick Kicker! on a weekly basis to kill any existing fleas and ticks and also to prevent further infestations. It may safely be used more often if needed. (If used on cats, the manufacturer recommends applying Flea Flicker! Tick Kicker! to the shoulder blade area only.)

As noted above, we prefer using natural-based products on our dogs and cats, so we like Ark Naturals’ holistic approach to pet wellness. The company seems committed to producing products which are safe and effective and they offer plenty of research on their website to back up their claims. The website also contains an “Ask the Pros” feature with discussions on pet health issues written by veterinarians and other pet professionals. A big paws up for providing us with an herbal-based product in our arsenal against fleas and ticks!

Price: $11.50 for an 8-ounce bottle on the Ark Naturals website. Flea Flicker! Tick Kicker! is also available at pet supply stores and from various online retailers including drugstore.com and amazon.com.
