Houston Astros Pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. Helps Dogs in Need

The 2017 World Series is underway, and while only time will tell whether The Los Angeles Dodgers or the Houston Astros will win the championship, one player has already won the admiration of animal lovers for helping dogs who have been thrown a curve ball by life.

When Lance McCullers Jr. isn’t pitching for the Houston Astros, the 24-year-old sports star is pitching the option of pet adoption to the public through the non-profit which bears his name, The Lance McCullers Jr. Foundation. Proud pet parents to rescue dogs Minka and Riggs, McCullers Jr. and his wife Kara’s shared compassion for our pals with paws prompted the pair to team up with area shelters and rescue organizations like Houston Pets Alive! to strive toward making the metropolis a no-kill city.

Since the foundation’s start, the baseball player has gone to bat for homeless animals in a variety of ways, from hosting fundraisers and posting adoptables on Instagram to offering financial aid for the care of canines and cats in crisis, like Gunner (seen in the photo below). Shot in the back and side, the wounded dog was on his own for weeks before his rescue. Although he still has an uphill battle to fight, Gunner no longer has to do it alone thanks to Buddy Up Rescue and the Lance McCullers Jr. Foundation, which is helping to cover the dog’s medical expenses.

Helping Houston Pets After Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey ravaged much of southwest Texas in late summer 2017, and while the flood waters have receded, the influx of help from those who care continue to advance in the state’s affected areas. Lance McCullers Jr. is among the many celebrities who showed, and continues to show, their support for both the people and pets in Houston. Having rolled up his sleeves as a volunteer with Harris County Public Health, collecting and distributing much-needed pet food and supplies to shelters, assembling crates and assisting with transport of adoptables in the days after the disaster, the compassionate athlete is still raising funds for the paws cause through sales of #Houstrong T-shirts.
