As you’ve noticed here on DogTipper, we shoot a LOT of photos. And we shoot video, which is a real memory hog.
So I thought for today’s tip I should talk a little about selecting a memory card.
Both our DSLRs and our compact camera (and our game camera) use SD cards…but we try very hard not to interchange cards and cameras. With a Sharpie marker, we mark each SD card for its camera and we really try to stick to that. Why? If you use one card in two camera, it will create separate folders, ones that often can be cleared only by returning that card to the camera where the shots were created.
We generally use cards sized between 1 G and 8 G, never larger, although our cameras will accept them. Why? Because when good cards go bad (and it’s happened to us), it’s downright tragic to lose a huge number of photos. We download the day’s photos every evening and, once that download is backed up, we clear the cards.
At the same time, we take care never to completely fill the SD card since doing so can cause problems!
Just this week, we received a new SD card to review, the Eye-Fi Mobile 2X. We haven’t tried it out yet so stay tuned for a review but here’s the quick version of what makes this card unique: it has built-in Wi-Fi that transfers photos and videos to your computer (or iPhone, iPad, or Android device). We’re going to give it a try this weekend so we’ll report back and let you know what we think!
