123*365: Using a Wide Angle Lens

Share with fellow dog lovers!

On this evening’s walk, we took Irie and Tiki to the creek for a quick dip in the quickly-diminishing swimming hole. I especially liked this shot because it catches Irie in a little patch of late day sunshine and because it illustrates the need for wide angle lenses.

This was shot with an 18mm lens. That’s not super wide but it does allow the camera to capture the whole swimming hole, something you just don’t get with a longer lens. Compare the above photo to this shot I took last week, also at the creek…

That photo was taken with the same lens but at 55mm instead of 18mm. It’s closer to Irie and has a shorter depth of field (with the area behind Irie falling out of focus) but the width of what you can see is much narrower.

I like my 18-55mm lens because it gives me both ranges in one lens (changing lenses and holding two leashes is a formula for disaster!)

Do you have a wide angle photo of your dog? We’d love to see it…just share your photo by clicking the + link to upload your shot!
