If you are a new pet parent of a playful pup, you might want to consider giving your fur baby a name associated with a doll that has taught generations the pure joy of play. From Barbie’s family and friends to her dog and cat companions, we’ve fetched a list of potential Barbie dog names for your very own living doll!

Barbie as a Dog Name

A shortened form of the name Barbara, the legendary doll was named after the daughter of Mattel co-founders and inventors of Barbie, Ruth and Elliot Handler. The name Barbie means “foreign.”

Barbie’s Family

Chelsea —  Since 2011 children have had the chance to play with seven-year-old Chelsea, one of Barbie’s siblings! The name means “chalk landing place,” referring to wharves in the West London area where cargo containing chalk were unloaded.

Francie — If your new canine companion loves to wear puppy apparel, you might want to name her after Barbie’s fashion-forward cousin from England.

George —  Meaning “Earthworker,” George is the name of Barbie’s father, who has made appearances in several Barbie animated movies.

Jazzie —  Only the most devoted doll collector will recognize the name of one of Barbie’s cousins.  Jazzie dolls were only on the market from 1988 to 1992.

Kelly — Before she was known as Chelsea, Barbie’s seven-year-old sister was called Kelly, a name which was used from 1995 to 2010. The name Kelly means “bright-headed.”

Krissy — A name little known outside of Barbie Land, Krissy (or Kristine) is Barbie’s infant sister.  

Margaret —  Although never a doll, as Barbie’s mother Margaret plays an important role in Barbie videos. The name Margaret means “pearl.” 

Millicent — Perhaps a name for an older fur baby, Millicent is Barbie’s grandmother. Meaning “strong in work,” Millicent is also Barbie’s middle name!

Skipper —  Barbie’s little teenage sis has been on the scene since 1964.

Stacie —  If your new tail-wagging chum is energetic and athletic, you might want to name your fur baby after Barbie’s 12-year-old, sport-loving sister! The name Stacie means “resurrection” and “fruitful.”

Tutti and Todd — Barbie’s little known twin siblings! While only a few fans may have played with Tutti and Todd dolls, which were sold as a set and manufactured from 1966 to 1971, children once again had the chance to add a Todd doll to their collection when the character was brought back from 1991 to 2008. The name Tutti means “all” or “together,” and Todd means “fox.”   

Barbie’s Friends

Becky —  Made from 1997 until 1999, Becky– who uses a wheelchair– gave children facing physical challenges  the chance to see themselves in a doll. 

Christie —  Created in 1968, Christie was Barbie’s first friend of color.

Dana — A part of Barbie’s rock band in the 1980s, the name Dana means “generosity.”

Midge —  You might want to name your new barking buddy after Barbie’s BFF!  Midge (also known as Margaret) is married to Ken’s best bud, Allan.

Nia — The first Native American in the Barbie universe, the name Nia means “purpose” and “bright.”

Nikki —  Barbie’s bestie since 2006, NIkki (also known as Nicole) is Christie’s sister.

PJ — One of Barbie’s discontinued companion dolls.

Raquelle —  If your new tail wagging companion has a cunning personality, you might choose to name her after Barbie’s frenemy.

Steffie —  1972 was the only year when kids found Steffie on department store shelves. A fitting moniker for any regal Rover, the name Steffie means “crown.”

Teresa —  Meaning “summer” or “to harvest,” Teresa made her debut in 1988.

Male Puppy Names Based on Barbie’s Boyfriends

Blaine —  Although her heart belongs to Ken, from 2004 to mid-2006 Barbie enjoyed the company of this cute “Cali Guy.”  Once dolldom’s favorite duo reunited, however, Blaine’s days in Barbie Land were over.  

Ken —  Did you know that the iconic male fashion doll was named after Mattel co-founder’s Elliot and Ruth Handler’s own son?  The name Ken means “handsome.”

The Animal Companions of Barbie and Her Friends

Blissa —  Barbie buffs who watched the animated web series Barbie: Life in The Dreamhouse will remember the main character’s feline friend.

DJ — Skipper’s canine companion.

Honey — A golden retriever who lives with Barbie’s frenemy, Raquelle.

Majesty — Barbie’s equine companion.

Mika — A feline friend of Barbie’s friend Teresa.

Sequin —  A name for the trend-setting tail-wagger, Sequin is Barbie’s French Poodle, who played a role in Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale.

Taffy —  Animal-loving little ones can see Barbie’s yellow Labrador Retriever pup in Barbie & Her Sisters in The Great Puppy Adventure and in the web series Barbie: Life in The Dreamhouse.

Tiffany —  A yellow Labrador Retriever, Tiffany– who lives with Barbie’s grandmother– is the mother of Barbie’s canine companion, Taffy.

Aqua —  Who could forget the Euroband that took the earworm “Barbie Girl” to the top of the charts?

Barkie —  A pup-centric play on the name Barbie.

Carson — Ken’s last name!

Elliot Handler —  Along with his wife Ruth, Elliot Handler was the co-founder of Mattel.

Lilli — Mattel purchased the rights to a German doll named Bild Lilli, based on a cartoon character named Lilli. Mattel renamed the doll Barbie–and the rest is history!

Malibu —  If your new canine companion enjoys fun in the sun, you might want to name him or her after sun-kissed Malibu Barbie, which debuted in 1971.

Margot Robbie — The actress who stepped into Barbie’s stilettos for the Greta Gerwig-directed 2023 movie Barbie.

Mattel — The toy manufacturer that has brought Barbie to generations of children since 1959.

Roberts — Barbie buffs will recognize the famous doll’s last name!

Ruth Handler — A name for the four-legged friend of a true Barbie aficionado. Ruth Handler was Mattel’s first president and the inventor of everyone’s favorite fashion doll! 

Ryan Gosling — The actor who brought Ken to life on the big screen.
