Is Kohl’s Dog Friendly?

Share with fellow dog lovers!

With over 1100 locations, Kohl’s is ranked as the largest department store chain in the US. Along with fashion and home decor, they also sell plenty of pet products, from dog beds to dog sweater. But is Kohl’s dog friendly?

Are dogs allowed at Kohl's?

Unfortunately Kohl’s is not a dog-friendly chain. While there may always be a store manager who permits dogs, this is not a chain that welcomes dog shoppers.

Please plan to leave your dog at home for a shopping trip to Kohl’s (bring him home a surprise!) or shop the Kohl’s online store.

Are Service Dogs Allowed in Kohl’s?

A trained service dog that is required to assist you is allowed in any Kohl’s store under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which notes, “A service animal is a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.”

You are not required to have a special vest, harness or tag on a service dog to enter Kohl’s or other public areas, however, stores are allowed to ask two questions regarding service dogs:

(1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability,

(2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform

According to the ADA, “Staff cannot ask about the person’s disability, require medical documentation, require a special identification card or training documentation for the dog, or ask that the dog demonstrate its ability to perform the work or task.”

Service dogs must be with the person they are trained to serve. (If your spouse requires a service dog, you cannot bring the service dog into the store; the dog has to be working with the person who needs the assistance to be eligible to enter non-dog friendly places.)

If you have any questions, call the ADA Information Line at 800-514-0301 (Voice) and 1-833-610-1264 (TTY) M-W, F 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., Th 2:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (Eastern Time) to speak with an ADA Specialist.

NOTE: If your dog is not a trained service dog, do NOT misrepresent your dog as a service dog or you will be breaking the law. Depending on where you live, misprepresenting your dog as a service dog can carry a fine of up to $1000.
