World Animal Day, October 4
October 4, 2011 by Paris Permenter and John Bigley

October 4 is World Animal Day, an event started in 1931 in Florence, Italy. The day was selected because it is the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals; at many churches, a special blessing of the animals is held on the Sunday closest to the feast day.
Today the event, which was launched at a convention of ecologists, has grown to span all beliefs and nationalities. This special day to celebrate animals encompasses pets and wildlife alike.
Have you ever taken your dog to a Blessing of the Pets?
