10 Reasons I’m Thankful for Our Dogs This Season

10-reasons

Rachael Ray Nutrish has sponsored this post, but all opinions are my own.

With this week’s Thanksgiving holiday, we kick off the holidays, a season of love and laughter and, most especially, of thanks for all that we have in our lives. In our home, many of our thanks are for our dogs and cats. Irie, Tiki, Inca, Lucky and Ochi make our family complete, and make our days joyous year around. On this Thanksgiving week, I’d like to look at 10 of the many reasons I’m thankful for our dogs each and every day!

Joy of Unconditional Love

Having a bad hair day? Too busy with work to clean the house? Well, the dogs just don’t care. They love us no matter what.

Joy in Simple Fun

Irie and Tiki take joy in the simplest fun: rolling in the grass, wading in the creek, and sitting on the porch. They inspire me to do the same.

Joy of Family

Both Irie and Tiki love nothing better than just hanging out with their fellow family members, whether that means us, each other, or our cats. Family comes first with these two.

Joy in Meeting New People

I have to admit that I’m sometimes a little shy around new people–but our dogs, especially Tiki, just LOVE to meet new people. With the dogs along on our travels, I’ve had the chance to meet many fellow dog lovers and always find that conversation comes so easily when there’s a four-legged topic standing right in front of us.

Joy in Rescue

Every day, Irie and Tiki remind me of all the great pets waiting for forever homes in shelters and rescues everywhere–like our Ochi was at Austin Pets Alive this fall when we adopted her from the ringworm ward. We are so honored to work with Nutrish, a company that donates a portion of proceeds to Rachael’s Rescue®, which was created to help animals in need. To date, over $14 million has been donated. This money has gone toward food, medical supplies and treatments for these unfortunate animals.

I have to confess that I sometimes get caught up in work and have a hard time pulling away from my computer. Irie and Tiki never fail to remind me when it’s time for their twice-daily walks. For all the benefit it does them to exercise and have a consistent schedule in their lives, though, I know that I’m the one receiving the most benefit from our dog walks. Not only does it get me up and moving but it also reminds me to stop and enjoy the world around me. My phone stays in my bag, and I cherish this quiet time with the dogs on our walking trails.

Joy in Mealtime

There’s no question that Thanksgiving is one of my favorite meals of the year but, like Irie and Tiki, I want to maintain that same mealtime appreciation throughout the year. Irie finds joy in every mealtime, and the sight of a Nutrish tub sets off a round of  powerful tail wagging.

Joy in Slowing Down

In this digital age, life can be hectic–too hectic. Irie and Tiki know that the best things in life don’t come with a screen or a keyboard. They inspire me to unplug, slow down, and just enjoy the moment.

Joy in Travel

John and I spent two decades traveling and living on planes and in hotel rooms. I have to admit that sometimes I got a little jaded about our travels–but Irie and Tiki have reminded me of the sheer joy of discovery when visiting a new destination. Unlike my concerns over a long check-in line, a delayed flight, or a traffic jam, Irie and Tiki just see the joy of new sights and smells.

Joy in Home

And for all their love of travel, Irie and Tiki like nothing better than just to enjoy their home, whether that’s a lazy morning on the couch, an afternoon in the office, or a hike in the woods around our house. They are a great reminder to me, especially during this hectic time of year, that there really is no place like home.

We hope you’ll join us at the #NutrishDog Twitter party sponsored by Nutrish next week to celebrate #GivingTuesday and to share our love of dogs. We’ll be giving out over $500 in prizes, and we’re going to be talking about two of my very favorite topics: dogs and rescue! Be sure to RSVP for the party (and to enter to win the pre-party prize, even if you can’t attend), and be sure to follow Nutrish across your favorite social media channels:

Our furry dogs Schooner & Skipper are family to us. Loved your blog today and it is so true how our pets make us happy everyday and it is the little things in life that make us happy. Snuggle time with them everyday is so important to them and me. Happy Thanksgiving and have a wonderful day.

Wonderful! It’s true! Our wonderful pets bring us so much joy!!! I’m thankful for that happy face that peaks over the edge of the bed each morning as soon as the alarm goes off, for the happy faces and wagging tails that greet me as I walk in the door after work each evening, for the warm bodies that snuggle up with me when we finally have time to relax, for the happy faces that are there and ready anytime to take a walk, catch a ball, cheer me up when I am down and spread joy to everyone we meet.
